Publikacja "Practical Piano Method" XIX-wiecznego kompozytora niemieckiego - Louisa Köhlera zawiera szereg praktycznych ćwiczeń na fortepian. Znajdują się w niej informacje z zakresu teorii muzyki oraz liczne wskazówki wykonawcze. Köhler rozpoczynając od podstaw zasad muzyki i notacji muzycznej, stopniowo wprowadza kolejne tonacje (do trzech znaków przykluczowych). Opiera się przy tym na licznych przykładach zaczerpniętych z popularnej literatury muzycznej i muzyki ludowej. Köhler sięga m. in. po kompozycje Mozarta, Schuberta, czy Chopina, by ukazać konkretne przykłady form muzycznych - walca, marsza i menueta. The keyboard consists partly of white and partly of balck keys, the latter raised above the former. The black keys are arranged in groups of twos and threes. Each white key immediately to the left and a group of two black ones called C and the next seven white keys to the right are D E F G A B C and, beginning with this new C in the same dorection, each successive set of eight keys answer to the same letters. Each set of eight constitutes an octave. The keyboard usually contains from six to seven octaves. Every key has its corresponding note in the stave. The stave consists of five lines, and the four spaces between them, also of additional short lines placed above and below the five-lined-stave as the notes extend in either direction.
