Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) to jeden z najbardziej znanych angielskich kompozytorów muzyki okresu baroku. Jest autorem m. in. słynnej opery "Dydona i Eneasz". Sonaty Purcella to kompozycje pięcioczęściowe o typowej, barokowej stylistyce. The four sonatas in E flat, F and D major and D minor belong to the collection published by Purcell's widow in 1697, two years after the death of the composer, title: "Ten Sonatas of Three Parts" which Purcell had already publiched in 1683 for Violin I and II, Bass and Basso Continuo. The bass part is a combination of the bass part for strings and of the figured continuo part acting as a harmonic support, this arrengement had already been devised in the first collection, a factor which led to the erroneous designation "four parts" in the second collection of the trio sonatas. Generally speaking the continuo only represents a doubling of the bass string parts, according to the cult of the period simplification was introduced at many places so that in the absence of a bass stringed instrument the continuo player would be obliged to supply the missing bass part with the left hand.
