I oto pewnego przedpołudnia podczas przechadzki po białowieskim parku usłyszałem wreszcie tę długo poszukiwaną nutę - liryczną, nieco zadumaną, o wyraźnie kresowym zabarwieniu. Czym prędzej więc zacząłem szkicować partyturę, by po kilkunastu dniach mieć gotową wersję utworu. "For a long time I could not make up my mind what kind of Concerto it was going to be - pathos-laden, lyrical, avant-garde or traditional? I was beset with doubts and hesitations for a long time. And then one morning, during a stroll in the Białowieża national park. I at last heard this longsought-for note - lyrical, a little pensive, clearly of bordeland provance in tone. I started to sketch the score quickly and the work was ready in a dozen or so days. The first rehearsals with the soloist followed, as well as the first revisions of the solo part to highlight it out and reveal more fully the instrument's potential. Finally, after several years and dozens of meetings with Tomasz Strahl, the cello part took final shape in spring 1997. The work was finished. You will find in it echoes of our Polish Eastern Bordeland - now and then in the music of the Concerto one will hear scraps of melodies and songs - once heard by me in the Vilnius region - enveloped in mild melancholy and sadness..." In January, 1981, I performed with Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, Buffy Sainte - Marie, and Native American actor Will Sampson at the Mikasookie All - Indian Arts Festival in Florida. During one of the concerts, I met and performed with Kevin Locke, a young Lakota traditional singer, hoop dancer and flute player. Kevin taught me the Honor Song for Sitting Bull, sung for over a century to celebrate the spirit of the great Lakota leader.Kevin's name appears in the score, along with that of Margot Thunderbird, a Shinnecock singer, who taught me the four - bar motif that appears in the second variation of the concerto. I mention their names here to honor native American traditions and to thank these two wonderful singers for the gift of their commitment to the traditional music of their peoples. Both melodies are well - known social songs, reflecting the deep power and beauty of the Indian Nations. Lista utworów: |
