Szkoła techniki skrzypcowej Otakara Ševčika (1852 - 1934) czeskiego skrzypka i pedagoga. Ševčik wypracował własną technikę gry, wielkie uznanie zdobyła jego tzw. metoda półtonowa i swoisty sposób prowadzenia smyczka. W latach 1870/73 był koncertmistrzem orkiestry Mozarteum w Salzburgu. od roku 1875 poświęca się pracy pedagogicznej i tak kolejno w latach 1875/92 jest profesorem klasy skrzypiec w Kijowie, od 1892 w konserwatorium w Pradze, od 1909 w Wiedniu i od 1919 ponownie w Pradze.

"Przedstawione "Kolędy i pastorałki" na "solowe" skrzypce powstały z myślą o naszej młodzieży skrzypcowej, która zyskała obecnie możliwość zagrania ich w wersji koncertowej. Za najbardziej odpowiednią dla tego typu utworów uznałem formę quasi - capricciów - krótkich kompozycji o charakterze popisowym. Obok podstawowej melodii, grający znajdzie tutaj cały arsenał efektów wirtuozowskich: dwudźwięki, akordy, pasaże, arpeggia, tremolanda, przeskoki smyczka przez struny, bariolaże, ricochety, podwójne staccato, glissando chromatyczne, flażolety, pizzicato lewą ręką, a nawet grę sul ponticello. Podobieństwa zamieszczonych w zbiorze kolęd do kaprysów N. Paganiniego, H. Wieniawskiego, H. W. Ernsta, a także do solowych kompozycji J. S. Bacha i E. Ysaye'a nie są przypadkowe. Różnorodność stylistyczna była moim celem w założeniu."

"Christmas Carols and pastorales for solo violin, presented here, were written with young violinists in mind, with the intention of providing them with the opportunity of playing such songs in a concert version. I considered quasi-capriccio, i. e. a short - piece, the most suitable form for that type of work. In addition to the basic melody, the player will find here a whole range of virtuoso effects: for example, double stops, chords, passage work, arpeggios, tremolando, cross-string bowings, bariolage, ricochet, double staccato, chromatic glissando, harmonics, left-hand pizzicato and even sul ponticello. The similarities between the carols included in the collection and the caprices by Paganini, Wieniawski and Ernst as well as the solo compositions by bach and Ysaye are not accidental. I have made stylistic diversity my aim."
