Bobrowicz's Grandes variations op. 6 on a theme from Mozart's Don Juan aria is one of the most beautiful Polish works for guitar of the 19th century. It maches Fernando Sor's Variations brillantes op. 9 from Mozart's The Magic Flute, played on stages worldwide. Beautifully engraved, published at Piller's in lvov presumably in 1826, it is Bobrowicz's first printed work.
The piece contains a theme and six virtuoso variations contrasted in mood, tempo, expression and aesthetics. Five of them are written in the major scale, only the penultimate in the minor scale and cantilena form. It ends in a virtuoso cadenza missing in the Lvovian edition. The sixth variation - with meditative musical breathing - ends in a bravura, extraordinarily impressive finale.
The publication of Grandes variations op. 6 is based on the 19th century edition by Breitkopf and Haertel dated 1982.
