Trzy anty - modernistyczne piosenki Cowella na głos wokalny z akompaniamentem fortepianowym, to nowatorskie dzieło, które wzbudziło wiele zainteresowania wśród znanych muzyków. Sam kompozytor - urodzony w 1897 roku, a zmarły w 1965, był ponadto pianistą, teoretykiem, pedagogiem i wydawcą. Należał do osób wzbudzających wiele kontrowersji. The moment he saw them, Henry Cowell could hardly wait to set to music the texts of the Three Anti - Modernist Songs. He owed them to Nicolas Slonimsky, who had included them in his Music Since 1900 (first published late in 1937). Slonimsky sent an early copy of the book to Cowell and in a letter of 31 January 1938 to fellow - composer John Becker, Cowell wrote excitedly, "Have you seen Slonimsky's book? I am setting the three 'Anti - Modernist Poems' in it to music". Within a month he had finished them, and he sent a copy of the score to the soprano Radiana Pazmor, who sang at least one of the songs -- "Hark! from the Pit a Fearsome Sound!" -- at a Pro Musica concert in Los Angeles on March 18th. Henry Lawes (1596 - 1662) to angielski muzyk i kompozytor, uczeń Włocha - Giovanniego Coperario. W 1966 roku British Museum w Londynie uzyskało manuskrypt zawierający ponad trzysta pieśni skomponowanych przez Lawesa w latach 1630 - 1650. Niniejsze wydanie zawiera sześć pieśni pochodzących z tego źródła, w opracowaniu na głos wokalny i fortepian. Pierwsze cztery pieśni napisane zostały do słów angielskiego poety Thomasa Carew, pozostałe dwie do słów Roberta Herricka. Henry Lawes was christened at Dinton, Wiltshire on 5th January 1596. He was a pupil of John Cooper and become a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1626. He published some sacred songs in 1637 and 1648, and in the 1650s issued three sets of "Ayres and Dialogues". At the Restoration he was appointed Composer in the Private Musick for Lutes and Voices. In 1966 the British Museum acquired a large autograph manuscript containing over three hundred songs and dialogues composed by Henry Lowes between 1630 and 1650.The words of the first four songs in the present selection are by Carew (poet).
