"This work, I am attempting to have the audience listen to the piano in a new and very intense way - to concentrate on the piano itself. Each of the first five movements is a kind of etude for the listener in which various, relatively isolated areas of pianistic expression are explored. For example, in the second movement the performer is to build up the kind of tremolo practiced by the 19th century virtuoso pianists but, here, carrying the idea even further to the maximum level of which the piano is capable. When this level is achieved, the performer plays a kind of recitative as the piano sound dies away and makes a faint but definite "cut - off" just before the sound becomes inaudible."
