This higly suggestive piece lacks the poetico-psychological backgroung usual in Schumann. Moreover, its structure, and the inexaustible richnes of its motoric technique, achich is to become a peature of this composition, seem so closely related to the music of the ealy 20th century, so that is has become the model for countless contemporary compositions, among wchich the Prokoview D minor Toccata, op. 11 stands out.
