Publikacja (część 2.) zawiera 14 cykli wariacji fortepianowych Ludwiga van Beethovena. Są to wariacje na tematy znanych utworów różnych kompozytorów, m. in. na temat "Menuett a la Vigano" z opery "La Molinara" G. Paisiello, czy też na temat "La stessa, la stessissima" z opery "Falstaff" A. Salieriego. The second volume of the new edition of Ludwig van Beethoven's variations for piano is entirely made up of works not included in the opus enumeration of his main output. It begins with the first composition by Beethoven that has come down to us, the Nine Variations on a March by Ernst Christoph Dressler (WoO 63) and in essentials covers the period up to 1800, that is the early period of Beethoven's last years in Bonn and first years in Vienna. The comparatively large total of these works, including the revelant ones in the first volume, itself underlines the significance which the variation principle had for Beethoven's entire creative development. Certainly a good many of these early variations have the character of occasional pieces, but they can equally well be understood as studies in which Beethoven experimented in a variety of ways with the possibilities of variation which were characteristic of his time.
